I’ve blogged that I see the need to move my data off big tech. Let the words follow some action:
Migrating off Instagram
From today’s perspective I consider myself an early user: I uploaded my first picture in May 2012, applying one of those filters. In total, I shared 212 pictures or videos, and with my recent migration plans, I didn’t want to loose any of these when leaving Instagram.
New alternative: Pixelfed
The new platform for pictures like these (not going into stories) will be Pixelfed, a Fediverse-based young alternative to Instagram. It feels like the early Instagram and has the features I would like to use, though obviously not all of Insta. The good thing is, it comes with an importer for your Instagram feed. You need to request an export of all your data, which takes a few minutes, which you can then upload to Pixelfed, and all your posts will be imported automatically.
It was stuck initially, but finally, all imports show up in my stream now. Obviously, no followers can be migrated, but I don’t care.
So, now I have my new pixelfed profile - which only shows my old Instagram pictures up to now.
